Are you training? Are you MAD?

No, seriously, are you Making A Difference in your learners lives? Do you plan different teaching styles or resources to help your participants absorb and retain necessary information?

Paediatrician Von Restorff popularised the Isolation Paradigm which supports the ‘dare to be different’ idea. Stand out. Not everything can have the WOW factor but you must plan some WOW in every training session. What is it that you want to most memorable?

As generations of learners ‘wag the dog’ and cause many teachers to fall in line with popular modes of delivery, it is time for us, as educators, to look at our own practices and evaluate them to judge effectivity.

“I’ve told them so they should know” is hopefully a long-disused notion. When it comes to training or teaching methods and resources, variety will be appreciated by learners long term. Many participants that have gone ‘into the same industry’ speak of memorable moments and practices when their trainers made an effort.

Rather than relying on a slim-line computer bag with a verbose PowerPoint or funky Prezi, a list of U.R.L.s and Youtube, let’s get learners curious and excited about the topic rather than just being entertaining (or boring).

· Props and models create fascination.

· Use colours for effect.

· 3D stimulates more interest than 2D.

· Music helps (choose the right moments).

· Talk to the heart (Get to know your learners’ interests)

· Create a quality supporting handout activity when using a video clip
